The annual Breakthrough Prizes are a set of international awards given in three categories in recognition of scientific advances. This year’s event, held in Los Angeles, featured a star-studded list of celebrity attendees, including Brie Larson, Mila Kunis, Christina Aguilera, Lily Collins, Gal Gadot, etc. The event, held at the Academy Museum of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is known as “the Oscars of Science.”

While the Oscars may be over and done, it seems another Oscar-like ceremony happened over the weekend, and so many stars made ultra-rare red carpet-appearances for it! Supporting the real superheroes. The A-list celebrated some of the brightest scientists in the world at the Breakthrough Prize ceremony on Saturday, April 14.

James Corden hosted the ninth annual event, which took place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles for the first time. The event, held for the first time since 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic, included performances from John Legend and will.i.am.

Presenters included Kristen Bell, Lily Collins, Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Zuckerberg, Gal Gadot, Brie Larson, Edward Norton, Leslie Odom Jr., Chris Pine and Chloe Zhao. They helped hand out $15.75 million to the Breakthrough Prize honorees.

This is not the first time that Vin Diesel attends the Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, in 2017 the Breakthrough Prize ceremony was held on December 4, 2016 at NASA’s Hangar 1 in Mountain View, California. Host Morgan Freeman was joined by Vin Diesel, Alicia Keys, Kevin Durant, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Alex Rodriguez, will.i.am and astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly, who presented the Breakthrough Prizes alongside technologists Daniel Ek, Hiroshi Mikitani, Sundar Pichai and Susan Wojcicki and prize founders Pricilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg. The show was broadcast live on National Geographic channel and later on Fox and National Geographic channels worldwide.
